How to Limit Responses on a Google Form

Google Forms are great for collecting survey and assessment data, but sometimes you may wish to turn them off when you have received a certain number of responses (e.g. if you are offering a PD class and only have room for 20 people, or you are organising a field trip and only have room for 40 students). Thankfully, there is a way to do this using Add-ons .  Here's how: Step 1:  From your form, go to the Add-ons  menu and select Get add-ons : Step 2:  In the window that appears, type in "Form Limiter" , hit Enter , and then click  + Free on the blue button that appears: Step 3:  Click Allow Step 4:  Now, go to the Add-ons  menu and you will see there is a new option called formLimiter .  Select this menu, and then Set limit : Step 5:  From the menu at the right-hand side, select the type of limit you wish to impose: Step 6:  Set your limit and response message, then click Save and enable

Practice a foreign language using speech recognition

Learning a foreign language is fun, but also challenging.  How do you practice a language that no one else around you speaks?  How do you know if the words are pronounced correctly?   Google Docs to the rescue!  There is an add-on for Google Docs called Speech Recognition with multiple languages to choose from.  Simply select the language that you are speaking, start to activate the microphone, and speak.  If the words are not spoken with the correct accents or are unclear, it will not display the correct words.  The person speaking must really concentrate on pronunciation in order to get the correct terms to appear.  An added bonus is that the words that the program recognizes are then inserted on the Google Doc. I was actually impressed with this feature.  For instance, I know a few words in Spanish from watching a lot of Dora the Explorer with my niece, but I never worked on pronouncing the words correctly so it was interesting to...

5 Apps for the ELL Classroom

Continuing our series of subject-based apps, here are five tools that can enhance the ELL classroom, or assist ELL students in other subjects: 1. Read&Write for Google Download it from the Chrome Store This is the all-in-one support tool for Google Chrome that allows you to hear words, passages, or whole documents read aloud with color highlighting; see the meaning of words explained with text and picture dictionaries; hear text translated into other languages; turn words into text as you speak; highlight text in documents or the web; and simplify and summarize text on web pages.  The only drawback is that many features are premium, and will vanish after 30 days if you don't pay.  The next four apps will replicate many of its features for free, but in separate apps. 2. Voice Recognition Download it from the Chrome Store Talk to type with this Chrome app.  It works in its own browser window, so will need to be copy-pasted later, or use the "Expor...

What are Add-Ons and how can they help me?

As a teacher there is never enough time to simply explore the full features of many different programs so we tend to miss out on the cool add-ons that would enhance instruction, learning, or assessment. When you open a Google Docs or Google Sheet there is a tab at the top titled Add-Ons.  This is likely one of those options that you have avoided because you have no idea what it actually means.  Who really has the time to explore and figure this out?  I am providing you with an overview of what can be found in the Add-Ons section by highlighting some of the features teachers may find useful.  In addition to these, check out a previous blog post about highlighting in Google Docs which is also a beneficial Add-On. Give assessments and collect data using Google Forms and Sheets Create a quiz or exit task in Google Forms, view the data in Google Sheets, and allow Flubaroo to score and calculate your results.  This is a great way to get quick feedback on ...
